This is a story about a love triangle. I’m sorry the title don’t make sense but that’s because most love triangle stories don’t. If you’ve noticed the trend, most love triangles now consists of 2 females and a male. Even the last big hit about two males, one was just biologically male. The Ton Ton Gutierrez vs. Goma to win Sharon or Edu Manzano vs. Christopher de Leon to win Vilma is so 80s. (The 90s was about Robin Padilla blasting a syndicate to win a Sharon/Vina, or Andrew E. kissing all the girls you can only fantasize about. Although on 90s TV, there always seem to be two guys fighting over Thalia.)
So back to my observation about the male centric triangle… Why? Because it’s more in tune with the population statistics where the female now outnumber the males? Is this really a form of empowering the female characters as some shows suggest because the women are taught to move on with their lives without the crutch of an a-hole who can’t choose between 2 pina-asa or hoping hopefuls? A guy who at the very least get his libidinal desires in check. Is it sexier as suggested by popularity of porn with 2 females and a schlong versus 2 schlongs looking for multiple holes? Which is it?
I read the other day an impassioned prayer to the Pope. She said:
true enough, a comment pinned the blame on:
But art is just imitating real life. Naturally, it will exaggerate and loosely take liberties where logic should exist to build a fantastic highlight where the protagonist shall rise. I don’t think it influences society any more than highlighting what already is there. The act of cheating, the premise for the triangle, may be plainly painted with the colors of uncontrolled sexual curiousity. There is an emphasis on sexual curiousity because all the personalities involved in the story are so damn good looking, cheating seems inevitable. So maybe that’s the message, the distilled common denominator in the drama. In reality, there is a lot of WTF said after learning that he/she cheats with a who, who looks more of a What… The Fuck…
The women/girls involved in this popular telenovela are both good emphasizing on the failing and weakness of the dude. That doesn’t make the conflict more complex from where I sit. I mean, if the two women profess the kind of love that even a Solomonic decision can’t solve, why don’t the confused dude turn Muslim or Mormon so he can freely love both as equally as he believed when he got in the quagmire in the first place? That compromise is much much easier than fooling one self as a Christian in crisis. Can’t a boy be happy with having both Kim and Maja. Isn’t that a more challenging story to write? A story where the 2 pursuers agree and just be you know, mature about it! It will appeal to our childhood Sesame upbringing with lessons on sharing and cooperation!
Then the other guy comes in. In the typical triangle set up, the other dude is the bland settlement. The nice guy who gets the one on the rebound. If I was to be the guy playing that role, I’d ask the writer to at least imply that I have a big dong down there. As you’ve seen, Derek will be in all types of emotional tear and choose between Angelica or Christine. He was seen making booty with both. Both traded violent slaps and barbed verbal abuse. The characters responded to primal desires who at some point said something along the lines of “Masarap ba ang asawa ko?!?” Cut and bleed dialogue. At least give the 2nd dude something more than the typical He’s a rich goody two shoes fill. The poor dude is coming after a Derek, so pan a camera where he’s shown fixing his crotch from the thigh area, something like that.
Settling for someone better was never the lesson. Or when the 2nd dude comes to the picture, the main dude turns gay. Then we’d realize this world still have so many feels to explore.
