A friend of mine re-posted this poem from more than 15 years ago. Published through Bulacan State University’s collegiate paper “Pacesetter”.  I used to get a kick out of how our artists interpret the verbiage that is my poetry.  The illustration gives it perspective and texture that was invisible when it was in vacuo of my head.

Allan Flores, the artist and a dear friend sketched what I thought was a pair of pants.  I just recently noticed a third leg, close, facing the other.  I no longer remember the conversation between the poet and the artist regarding the artwork.  As you can see, the stream of thought come in fragments and not necessarily smoothly framed as segments tied by the title spread at the last line of the first four verses.

Til now, a faint melody flows in my head when I read the third verse.  I imagine it as the chorus with a forced rhyme.  I can’t quite capture it since I was too stubborn to at least lay it out in some measure.  It’s this lack of discipline that makes me believe that there is an inordinate amount of mysticism in play as opposed to just plain laziness.

In the 4th line of the 5th verse, there was a typo that was left uncorrected, the word “lease”.  It’s supposed to be “leash” and would’ve created a dissociation with the reader since no one would accept the thought that they are willingly leashed.  The typo seem to have softened what is otherwise a slap of what prevails as societal reality with an admission to what we are as temporal beings on borrowed time.

So this lesson comes to an end my kids.  Keep on learning.
