Sidekicking

Burt Ward, Adam West
This duo is so nice, had they been active today their arch villain would be… social media…

Magic Johnson played with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for 10 years and went to the NBA finals 8 times where they won 5 (Magic, who played for 13 seasons went to the Finals once more, after Kareem retired, to pass the torch to a certain Michael Jeffrey Jordan). Nobody called him a sidekick despite being paired with the greatest scorer the league has ever had who, just dominated the preceding decade by winning MVP 6 times (71, 72, 74, 76, 77, 80). Maybe it helped that Magic’s rivalry with Larry Bird was so captivating, it catapulted them as the face of the league.

Also, in their decade long partnership, Magic won 3 season MVPs and another 3 Finals MVP (Kareem won one of each, but nobody’s gonna call him sidekick)

The marketers stretched the value of Christmas day’s showdown of the Warriors and Cavs since the Warriors broke into the opening gates with a mean winning streak.  The Warrior schedule looked promising since beating the Lakers for win #16. With a winning differential of some 14 points, Steph Curry scoring 40 at will, without playing in the fourth Q, the road to win #33 can’t seem to get fast enough. For some faux incentive, someone at marketing seem to have blurted out “Hey, Steph beating the LeBron can be for record game 33-0 if you add the dubs’ last 4 games of the 2014-2015 season!” and somebody concurred “Jason, you’re a genius! Hype up the gullible trolls of social media and let them feast on this meaningless debate”

The Ability To Win

Golden State played the same game plan with Harden.  They gave LeBron the buffet table and let him have an offensive feast.  They looked at the guest list and saw that LeBron was as sloppy with the ball next to Harden.  Just let him feast and let the rest feed on scraps.  The Warriors almost failed because their half baked double that didn’t commit as LBJ pounced on the paint did not produce  the errors it forced Harden, because Lebron played with his back to the basket.

Offense Will Win It This Year

Dan Aguilar, playoffs 2015
This must be the west finals.

Steph Curry is the favorite for the MVP race, mainly on the basis that his performance translated into wins, most than any other team in the NBA this year. More importantly he has improved his performance from last year’s numbers, particularly the TurnOvers department resulting to where GSW landed on the road to the playoffs. Harden is able to showcase the peak of his individual talent, almost Kobe-esque. But those type of numbers no longer translate to championships and some voters are persuaded by the individual’s fighting chance to lead his team to the finals.

This is where LeBron comes in, whose consistency is as boring as the Spurs

Here’s an excerpt of the 2nd article I wrote for Playboy Philippines which will be out soon…

Growing up, we annually buy two shoes at the start of the school year. A bland black leather shoe for the daily grind of school work and one for Physical Education. The black leather shoe was required to be unfashionable that even trussels, metal studs and the likes are strictly turned down by the nuns who run the school. If the shoe is featured in a current

On The King’s Agenda

You too, you just won't admit to it...
You too, you just won’t admit to it…

Now this is power. Another reason to hate the “self proclaimed king,” a “usurper to the throne”, a “prima donna of the league”. Aren’t you glad to be a San Antonio band wagoner right now? The only team not affected by the hoopla.

Melo would’ve been talking strategy with Kobe by now, Bosh would’ve been enjoying the cash, and Granger would be the LeBron replacement, the new Robin when the aging Batman has to play lead hero again. But all of that has got to wait.

Tilting The Deciding Game 3

How good is this year’s NBA finals? Put it this way, if you’re a fan of either side, you can say that you’re team can easily be up 2-0 (Heat: if only LBJ didn’t cramp up; Spurs: if only they made those critical 4 free throws)

If the Spurs are gonna do it, they should do it in 6. This is a tall task because the Heat has been very good in bouncing back from losses. By keeping it close though, they are capable of stealing a win in the end especially if the shooters are clicking. Taking a win on a game 7 is difficult because the poise and confidence of the defending champs thrives in those moments.
